Is the reason Absalom goes on his bitter rebellion because of Davids inaction? Had David disciplined his family after the rape of Tamar, this may not have happened.
I'm sure family dynamics would also be awkward when dad has numerous wives other than your own mother.

Thank you for your response! Everyone is quick to think of the up side of their dreams (like being a professional model), but it takes a bit more thought and honesty with oneself to think about the potential down sides. And I have found that it can be absolutely liberating as well!

today teaching was EXACTLY for me.... I thank God for you and your website. the part you explained at the end of nov 28th study about "is it possible to live w/o suffering & live w/o being prideful" I was in deep thought about that this evening. after watching some clean R&R music videos then I came back to meditate on Gods word, and began to thank Him for my struggle b/c it keeps me crying out to him. There was a time i sought to be a professional model, but NOW, I thank God that, that door was never open.. I don't believe that I would know Him like I do if I worked/lived in that arena. Thanku for expounding on the word after you read the scriptures on the podcast.

July 14, 2010
Judges 20:1-20:48
9: Now, I see the significance. They are going to rise up against the people that did this evil thing to his wife and himself. Cutting her into 12 pieces was a way of bringing the 12 tribes of Isreal together to extract revenge.
Because one small group of people, compared to the two armies in todays reading, did one inexplicable act of sin, countless lives were lost in battle and entire city was burned to the ground. Therefore, the cocumbine did not die in vain, rather, she was used by God as a lesson to the children of Isreal.
Jeremiah 13:1-13:27
14: "And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the Lord; I will pity nor spar, nor have mercy, but destroy them." (KJV) Yesm the wicked prosepr but only for a moment. We need to keep our faith in God and he will take care of our enemies and those that seem to prosper and not worship Him.
John 8:1-8:11
7: "...He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." (KJV) We should not be so quick to judge others. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones!

July 13, 2010
Judges 19:1-19:30
22: "...Bring forth the man that cam into thine house, that we may know him ...." 25: ... so the man took his concubine, and brought her fourth unto them; and they knew her and abused her all the night until the morning:..." (KJV) Here we have our first look at homosexuality in the Bible. Apparently, it must have been common practice. But the part that kills me the most is that the husband did not try to fight, flee or argue. Instead, he just hands over his wife to the mob. And, he was going to leave her? And I really don't understand why he cut her up into 12 pieces and sent it throughout the land of Isreal. I am not sure what this was to signify?
Jeremiah 12:1-12:17
12: ".... Wherefore doeth the ways of the wicked prosper?" (KJV) I ask myself this every day!
6: God is telling Jeremiah that even his own house has betrayed him and seeks to kill him and he tell him not to believe them.
The Lord tells Jeremiah that he will destroy the wicked. I have to remember that the wicked surely do prosper for now, but in the end the Lord will destroy them. The problem for me is that I want them to be "destroyed now" but I have to trust the Lord that I will prevail in the end, whenever that end comes, if I stay true to God.
John 7:25-7:53
34: "...If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink" (KJV) I always loved this verse. So much so, this writing has come to me and I put it to paper long ago because sometimes, life gets so rough, I took comfort in this verse:
Paradise Island by Anneliese Garrison, RN
© written 8/5/90

One afternoon, feeling extremely weary from my long day's work, I lay down to rest my tired body. While sleeping, I dreamed of an island. An island all my own. I was an island from the very heavens above and it is for this reason that I will call it Paradise Island.

There I stood on my Paradise Island with it's deep asure ocean stretching endlessly before me. Nothing stood between the ocean and I except the sparkling white sand that glistened in the sunlight. Like diamonds that sparkle in the sun, the sand sparkled every color of the rainbow. I could see the swells of the ocean rising and falling ever so gracefully in the warm summer breeze. From a distance, the swells looked like dolphins springing forth from the water. They would come upon the sand and back into the ocean as if to entice me to draw closer, and so I did. I could feel the soft sea air of which I could taste of the salt upon my lips which it had lifted from the ocean where the ocean met the sand. I paused for a momment to enjoy this splendor of heavenly creation as I looked into the golden horizon that was over the vast azure ocean. Yes, I was truly in Paradise.

Behind me, stood human-like trees with their outstretched arms, though I knew they were just branches, calling me. I felt that the calling of these trees must have been the sweet, soft rustling sound of the leaves, therefore, I was not afraid, but rather, I was quite intrigued. More out of curiosity than anything else, I followed the beckoning of the magestic forest. Upon drawing closer, I found that they were indeed enchanted trees and I was in an enchanted forest. I followed a path through the forest for about a quarter of an hour. Looking all about me, I watched the bluebirds fly overhead, I saw a deer with it's fawn fast asleep in the afternoon sun, when sudeenly, I cam upon a open field. I saw the green grass which was taller by half than I. I could see the butterflies--yellow, white and red they be, gluttering cheerfully through the tall grass the color of Emeralds.

I sat down to enjoy this breathtaking view of this open, wonderous field and to enjoy the sweet smelling perfume of the flowers and feel the gentle wind blowing through my hair and whisper sweet nothings in my ear. A dove appeared white as snow and with an olive branch in it's mouth, and on the wings of it, the world "love" written therein. I rubbed my restful eyes and looked again. However the dove was no longer next to me but it seemed as though it wanted me to follow. Again, I set off down a path to just where, I did not know.

After a few minutes, I heard the sound of rushing waters. I t sounded as if it were a waterfall, and indeed, so it was. For without a moments notice, I found myself out of the field and onto a bridge. It was a large bridge not made of wood but of ivory. A tremendous rushing waterfall bellowed before me and hitting the rocks below it sounded like a thousand crystal glasses all toasting at once. I stood in awe and wonder.

A Heavenly Being appeared beside me on the bridge. His robe reached his feet with a golden girt around His waist. His eyes appeared to be as fire and his face was so bright I could not look directly at Him. Looking down at his feet, they were as fine polished brass and He said to me, "My child why have you come?" In a small still voice I answered, "I have come to do that which I can not do in my own world. To rest, relax, to be at peace with myself and the world around me." I was taken in by all the beauty that surrounded me and the peace of this Paradise Island. "My dear, sweet child of the earth, you may come here any time your heart so desires." He answered and then continued, "Come unto Me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls. You may come here any time you wish for I am with you always. Go, drink of the Living Waters you see before you." I walked down off the bridge and went to the Waters edge and drank of it. It gave me new life. I felt peaceful, rested and revitalized. I turned to thank the Man, as I looked towards the bridge I could no longer see Him.

All at once, I found myself back in the open field, through the forest and onto the beach once more. It was just as I had left it. The sea was gently calling. I turned to answer the call of the sea-- I awoke. I found myself into another day and if I did not hurry, I would be late for yet another long days work. "Come unto Me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." came to my mind. It was then I realized, I had met my God. The world hurriedly surrounds me. I smile and close my eyes.

I found myself into another day and if I did not hurry, I would be late for yet another long days work. “Come unto Me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” came to my mind. It was then I realized, I had met my God. The world hurriedly surrounds me. I smile and close my eyes.

Judges 18:1-18:31
These Danites were just barbarians! The attacked a city that had no dealings with them or anyone else. They stole their land and called it there own. Come to think of it, this sounds much like the "White Man" when they came to America. Did we not attach the Indians? Did we not conguer a land that had nothing to do with anyone and called it our own?
They stole the graven images and even Micah's priest!
Jeremiah 11:1-11:23
15: "What hat my beloved to do in mine house, weeing she hath wrotght lewdness with many and the holy flesh is passed from thee? When thou doest evel, then thou rejoicest." (KJV) In other words God is saying that we can not do what so many of us do, we can live our lives all week long and do the things of this world and then, go to church on Sunday and expect everything wrong that we did through the week to cancel out and everything will be okay!
John 7:1-7:24
4: "For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret" (KJV) The Lord knows what is in our hearts. There are no secrets in the presence of God.
17: "If any man will do his will he shall know of the doctrine" (KJV) God wants us to do his will and get on the right track in life.
19: "Did not moses give you the law, and yet not of you keepeth the law?" The Lord wants us not to just preach His Word but to DO His word!

July 11, 2010
Judges 17:1-17:13
2: Here we meet Micah for the first time. It is interesting that his story starts out as a theft stealing from him own mother. But he is blessed for offering it back.
Jeremiah 10:1-10:25
This entire chapter talks about the worthlessness of idols.
6: "Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O Lord;" So many people serve the god of riches, wealth, fame, job, family and we forget to serve the one true person that we should serve everyday ... the Lord.
John 6:22-6:71
27: "Labour not for the meat that perisheth" So often again we get tied down to our "careers", so worried about how we are going to pay our bills. But God says not to work for the food that will spoil but work for the Son of man that will take care of our needs. God will take care of our NEEDS not necessarily our WANTS. I think a lot of times when we go about our daily lives, we confuse our wants, with our needs. For example, we have to pay the cable bill. Is this cable bill a need or a want? TV is free. We don't need cable, we want it, therefore, we have a bill and must work to pay for it.
30: The people always needed a miracle or sign to believe.
2 themes were prominate in this reading today. 1). I am the Bread of Life and 2). I will raise him up on the last day. Reminds me of that beautiful song: You RAISED ME UP.

July 10, 2010
Judges 16:1-16:31
5:"... and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver." (KJV) There were five lords of the Philistines, one for each of the major Philistine cities. This means that Delilah would receive 5500 pieces of silver. Wow, did not Jesus get sold out for 30 pieces by Judas. Just a small tidbit that I found to be interesting.
17: "That he told her all his heart, and he said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head;..." This is indeed what made Samson weak, but I ask again, what was he thinking? Three times before he asked and 3 times before she told him his enemies were present. Did he not think that they would be present this time? Samson's downfall all through both chapters now have been women, in this chapter he even sleeps with a prostitute, perhaps, Samson's stupidity was punishment from God for his behavior?
27: "...and there were upon the roof about 3000 men and women...." (KJV) We know the rest of this story, Samson was able to colapse the temple killing everyone. This reminds me of another more recent event in American History, September 11, 2001 did not close to 3000 people die that day as well. Now, I am in no way saying that our enemies, terrorist that did this to our Twin Towers, Pentagon, and the plan over Pennsylvania were godly people for they were not, and I also am not saying that the almost three thousand americans that day deserved to die for the unjust ways, but what I am making a reference to is to the the fact that perhaps God wants us to "wake up" and repent from our "worldly, ungodly ways". Perhaps, this is why he allowed those events to unfold September 11, 2001. Yet today, have we? In my opinion, as a nation, indeed we have not and we are no different then the children of Isreal when they turned away from God. If anything, we are worse today then we ever have been and God is punishing us yet again, economy, job losses, big business going backrupt etc. When will we as Americans wake up and realize this nation was founded for Freedom of Religion and turn back to Christ?
Jeremiah 9:1-9:26
6: "Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit..." (KJV). I actually like Sauls's reading on this, he said, they are a great nation but they became so through deceit, or something to this effect. Again, much like America today, it is only a matter of time. Our leaders could read this and predict what is going to happen to us as a Nation if we do not turn back to Him.
23: "Thus saidth the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
24: "... glory that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lobing kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth ..." (KJV) If one thinks about it, this is what brought down Samson's enemies. They boasted how great they were while they were celebrating in the temple and the Lord gave Samson the strength one more time to destroy the philistines in the temple.
John 6:1-6:21
Jesus has done 3 miracles thus far and what do the church leaders do? Rebuke Him for doing good deeds on a Sunday!
12: "... gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost..." (KJV) His fourth main miracle. Observation, notice he is doing miracles that people can relate to in everyday life? Food is a basic need so Jesus fed the crowd. Jesus came down to the people's level in order to win over their faith to Him.
I won't keep counting all of Jesus' miracles I am just making a point here in my daily readings.
Saul, good points you made about todays readings recording Samson.

Saul: I found a good concordance site, or commentary site, verse by verse explainations by various authors, when I have a question. I am just wondering, do you know of any good web site that has maps of Bible Time places as compared to Today. For example, Philistines, I believe now, could be wrong, is the Gaza strip in current day Isreal. I am just curious and it would help my learning process. Never heard of the places in the Bible except that I read them in the verses. If I could see those places on a modern day map, I could perhaps understand the Bible phrophecy better as well.

His wife decieved him to the Philistines. Note of interest, he will not have learned his lesson, later, he will be decieved by Delilah as well in the same manner.
Judges 15:1-15:20
2: "... is not her younger sister fairer than she? taje ger, I pray thee, instead of her." (KJV) Why would Samson's father encourage his son to be with a Philistine at all? At first, he scolded Samson for even being with a Philistine and now, he his telling him to go be with her younger sister because she is better looking?
20: "And he judged Isreal in the days of the Philistines 20 years." As mentioned now we have met all 12 Judges / Leaders told to us in the Book of Judges: Otheniel, Ehud, Samgar, Deborah, Gideon, Tola, Jaar, Jepthah, Ibzan, Elon, Abdon and Samson.
Jeremiah 8:1-8:22
9: "The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken; lo, they have rejected the word of the Lord; and what wisdom is in them." I actually like The Net Bible's reading of this verse: They have used their writings to make it say that which it does not really mean. This is why we have to study the Bible carefully and for ourselves. Lots of religions twist the Bible to make it mean what they want it to mean. An example that comes to mind for me are Jehovah Witnesses. they believe that woman are not allowed to be leaders of the church. However, since I started reading the Old Testament, how to they explain away that Deborah was used by God to lead His chosen people, the Isrealites? Next time, they knock on my door, I will ask them or someone can comment on this below if they know the answer. For I, do not.
ll: "For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace." (KJV) It is much easier to give lip service to a person in need and tell them everything is going to be alright. God wants us to HELP those in need and make try to make everything alright in times of trouble not just give lip service.
John 5:1-5:47
8: Here we see Jesus' third miracle: "Rise take up thy bed and walk." (KJV)
24: "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life." (KJV) Here again, the same message as in the famed verse of John 3:16 but people were having a hard time getting this point of Jesus' message.

As mentioned, I have been listening to the reading, writing my thoughts as I go along. But I would like to mention, I found a wonderful website, that explains each chapter verse by verse, not just by one person but by serveral.
[ http://preceptaustin.org ] all one has to do is click on the Book of the Bible under "Choose An Option". Wonderful link!
July 08, 2010
Judges 14:1-14:20
18:"If ye had not plowed with my heifer" (KJV) This verse stood out to me because, "Did Samson just call is wife a cow?" I know we use that word today as a negative slang but I looked up the word in Wikipedia and a heifer is "A young cow before she has had her first calf." but still why this analogy? F. B. Meyer's Online commentary states: "In calling her a “heifer” he was ridiculing her for her untamed and stubborn spirit (cf. Je50:11; Ho4:16). One wonders what the result of this whole story would have been had he not plowed with their heifer. He had no right to her because she was part of an alien nation. And yet in willful disobedience he had determined to have her.

We wonder how his wife felt being compared to a heifer? The proverb simply means, “You couldn’t have done what you did if you hadn’t broken the rules,” because heifers weren’t used for plowing. Since the guests had played foul, technically Samson could have refused to pay the prize; but he generously agreed to keep his promise. Perhaps he found out that his wife’s life had been threatened and he didn’t want to put her and her family into jeopardy again.

Those who can’t control their tongue can’t control their bodies; and in Samson’s case, the consequences of this lack of discipline were disastrous."
20: "Samson's wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend". (KJV) Wait, did I read this correct? Why was Samson's wife given to his best man? Sure enough she was! Again qouting F. B. Meyer "If Samson had won his way and married a Philistine woman, that relationship would have crippled the work God had called him to do." I guess in Bible Times, one did not have to get divorced first?
Jeremiah 7:1-7:34
6:"If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt: 7: Then will I cause you to dwell in this place," (KJV) Before God wanted them to drive out the other tribes now he wants them to stop?
John 4:43-4:54
50: "Jesus said unto him, 'Go thy way: thy son liveth'. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him and he went his way". This verse stuck out because 2 verses back Jesus said, "Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe." This gentleman believed without "seeing" and the Lord blessed him.
This was His second miracle and he happened in the same place He did his first miracle, turning water into wine, -- Capernaum.

As mentioned, I have been listening to the reading, writing my thoughts as I go along. But I would like to mention, I found a wonderful website, that explains each chapter verse by verse, not just by one person but by serveral.
[ http://preceptaustin.org ] all one has to do is click on the Book of the Bible under “Choose An Option”. Wonderful link!
July 08, 2010
Judges 14:1-14:20
18:”If ye had not plowed with my heifer” (KJV) This verse stood out to me because, “Did Samson just call is wife a cow?” I know we use that word today as a negative slang but I looked up the word in Wikipedia and a heifer is “A young cow before she has had her first calf.” but still why this analogy? F. B. Meyer’s Online commentary states: “In calling her a “heifer” he was ridiculing her for her untamed and stubborn spirit (cf.

Those who can’t control their tongue can’t control their bodies; and in Samson’s case, the consequences of this lack of discipline were disastrous.”
20: “Samson’s wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend”. (KJV) Wait, did I read this correct? Why was Samson’s wife given to his best man? Sure enough she was! Again qouting F. B. Meyer “If Samson had won his way and married a Philistine woman, that relationship would have crippled the work God had called him to do.” I guess in Bible Times, one did not have to get divorced first?
Jeremiah 7:1-7:34
6:”If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt: 7: Then will I cause you to dwell in this place,” (KJV) Before God wanted them to drive out the other tribes now he wants them to stop?
John 4:43-4:54
50: “Jesus said unto him, ‘Go thy way: thy son liveth’. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him and he went his way”. This verse stuck out because 2 verses back Jesus said, “Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.” This gentleman believed without “seeing” and the Lord blessed him.
This was His second miracle and he happened in the same place He did his first miracle, turning water into wine, — Capernaum.

Wow, spoiler alert! I wanted to find the judges for myself. LOL I had no idea how many judges were in The Book of Judges when I read it as a child, so I was keeping a list. Had no idea there were no more after Samson in The Book of Judges. Dang it! LOL Seriously, thank you for your explaination. I actually love your Bible you are reading from I am just use to the King James but your Bible does help me understand the KJV much better.
I have been having plenty of problems in my life so June 25, 2010 I decided to go back to my "old paths where is the good way and walk therein." Jeremiah 6:16 (KJV) and rededicate my life to spending time with God each day. Well, today I got a phone call that may help me. I am at the tip of getting my prayers answers.

In response to your question, I agree with your list. I would not call Barak a judge; he was a general serving under a judge, and the tradition of the judges is that there is (at most) one judge at a time, and sometimes no judge at all. Other judges are generals (e.g. Gideon and Jephthah) as well as judges, but Deborah has delegated control of the army to Barak.
Thus, by your list, we have met 11 judges (Othniel, Ehud, Samgar, Deborah, Gideon, Tola, Jaar, Jepthah, Ibzan, Elon and Abdon), and Samson makes 12. In reference to your earlier comment, I would not call Abimelech a judge (it seems that judgeship is dependent on some sort of divine election or calling, and Abimelech definitely did not have this), but some scholars do. I think the divine calling is important. Still, I'm sure, the process of becoming a judge - and being recognized by the people as such - was probably infinitely more messy than the text indicates. Judges 4:4 says "Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel at that time." It is presented as fait accompli, when in fact, God presumably appeared to her or otherwise indicated His will that she lead. She probably chafed against the idea/freaked out/did all the other things good leaders like Moses have done in similar situations. Then, people probably talked all sorts of trash ("Deborah? Who does she think she is?" or "Deborah? She's a woman! How can a woman lead Israel?" or "How come it's 'Deborah's Palm?' Why can't it be MY palm tree?!"), but eventually, her leadership combined with God's anointing stilled the criticisms, and she became established. I'm embellishing, but knowing something about human nature, I feel fairly confident it looked rather messy in practice. I would also suspect that there were interlopers besides Abimelech: selfish or misguided people not anointed by God who pretended to the judgeship. Presumably they didn't cause the sort of damage Abimelech did (and hence are not considered important enough to deserve special mention). Think of a presidential election: when elections are far enough in the past, we only think of the victor (Rutherford B. Hayes was president once long ago. Who did he beat to win the office? I would have to look it up on Wikipedia. Samuel Tilden, by the way. And that was a very messy election indeed!). Even in the recent past, we think of elections as two-person affairs: 2008 as Obama vs. McCain, 2004 as Bush vs. Kerry. In fact, there are dozen of men and women who ran in primaries, some of whom played large roles, some of whom played smaller roles. I'm not comparing presidents to judges or trying to make any political statement; I'm simply asserting that, the farther back we look, the more the details get fuzzy and the messes get cleaned up or at least simplified, simply because the only alternative would be a book of Judges that was thousands of pages long!
Eli and Samuel are called judges in I Samuel, but they are not part of this narrative in Judges, and 12 is a nice number.

Saul: I have a question. I am assuming whomever led the Children of Isreal into battle and was victorious and the Isrealites had peace for _______ years was considered their leader or judge. However, I would not consider Barak a leader because he said he would not go into battle unless Deborah went with him, On this assumption, so far in the readings we have met 10 judges: Otheniel, Ehud, Samgar, Deborah, Gideon, Tola, Jaar, Jepthah, Ibzan, Elon and Abdon. Am I correct?
Judges 13:1-13:25
3-4: ..."but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing:" (KJV) Interesting that even in the ancient bible times, people knew that alcohol was bad for an unborn child. Today, we know it causes fetal alcohol syndrome, although, I am sure they did not know this in Bible Times.
24: "And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson." (KJV) It is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "sun". Here is our first clipse at the next leader / judge of Isreal.
Jeremiah 6:9-6:30
11:"For even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days." (KJV) Interesting that God did not want to spare anyone, men, woman, children and the old. Because, the all practiced deceit in the eyes of God.
16: "Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way and walk therin, and ye shall for rest for your souls. But they said, we will not walk therein." First off, how stupid. Who does not want to have inner peace. All God is telling them to do is to walk in their old spiritual ways and they said no. This is why I started reading the Bible again, I am getting "back to my old spiritual ways" so that I can have inner peace.
John 4:1-4:42
37: "And herin is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth." (KJV) This seems to be a contradiction in the verse Galations 6:7 "Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”(KJV)

"As I am reading the Bible with you, I find I am having more questions than answers."
-----------------------------------

In my opinion, this is a pretty good sign that you are doing it right. As you know, I pose questions all the time on the podcast. It is in chewing on the hard topics (like "what in the world was Jephthah thinking about when he promised a human sacrifice?") where I believe God can give us insight and teach us things.
Lingering doubts, questions, seeming contradictions, and the like are what create the tension and dissonance in our minds and hearts that lead to true growth.

Judges / Leaders thus far: Otheniel, Ehud, Samgar, Deborah, Gideon, Tola, Jaar and Jepthah ...
July 06, 2010
Judges 11:17-12:15
36: "...do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the Lord hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies ..."(KJV) First of all, don't make promises to the Lord without thinking about them first! I mean, who did Jepthah think was going to come out of his house. I am sure Gideon would have went back to the Lord and tried to "rebargain" with him. and Secondly, his daughter had a great attitude. If this had been myself, I would have been extremely upset!
12:1 Jepthah just sacrificed his only daughter to the Lord as he promised he would. And now the Ephraimites gather to burn his house down? Good Lord, have a heart gentleman!
8: We meet the ninth judge Ibzan is leadership was relatively short. 6 years and nothing about his leadership is mentioned.
11: Here we meet the tenth judge Elon, ruled Isreal for 10 years.
13: Here we meet the eleveth judge: Abdon, he judged / lead Isreal for 8 years.
Otheniel, Ehud, Samgar, Deborah, Gideon, Tola, Jaar, Jepthah, Ibzan, Elon and Abdon ... So far, I like Deborah and Gideon's leadership styles the best!
Jeremiah 5:20-6:8
This entire reading is God's judgement foretold
28: The wicked will prosper but in the end, those that trust God will be victorious.
John 3:23-3:36
27: ... A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. I think a lot of times we don't stop and think about this. We have nothing, all of our money, jobs, cars, gifts were all given to use by God. We did not buy our house, God gave us the job, that allowed us to make the money to get the house. We did not have children. God planted the seed of life within us, that allowed us to bear a child, etc ....
As I am reading the Bible with you, I find I am having more questions than answers. [ Commentary on the Book of Judges ]

This entire reading is God’s judgement foretold
28: The wicked will prosper but in the end, those that trust God will be victorious.
John 3:23-3:36
27: … A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. I think a lot of times we don’t stop and think about this. We have nothing, all of our money, jobs, cars, gifts were all given to use by God. We did not buy our house, God gave us the job, that allowed us to make the money to get the house. We did not have children. God planted the seed of life within us, that allowed us to bear a child, etc ….
As I am reading the Bible with you, I find I am having more questions than answers. [ Commentary on the Book of Judges ]

Judges / Leaders so far: Otheniel, Ehud, Samgar, Deborah, Gideon ... Still looking for the 6th Judge. Now, I know it is not Abimelech ...
July 05, 2010
Judges 10:1-11:16
2: Interesting, Tola I guess would be the 6th judge.
3:Jaar would be the 7th?
6: Although not much is said about these two judges, Isreal may a well trademark their actions .. "And the children of Isreal again did evil in the sight of the Lord" (KJV) ...
14: "Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation". (KJV) God has had enough. He is as a frustrated parent, a father to a son that keeps doing wrong.
16: ... "and His soul was grieved for the misery of Isreal." (KJV) But just as a frustrated parent, we always come to the aide of our children due to unconditional love. The Lord will help Isreal as well.
11:1 Interesting that the Bible points out the Jephthah was the son of a prostitute and yet, he ends up being the 8th judge used by God to lead his people.
Jeremiah 5:1-5:19
3: "O Lord, are not thine eyes upon the truth?" (KJV) The Lord is use to "heard headed children"! We saw this parrellel in Judges 10:14-16.
10: I know that the scriptures uses the husband and wife analagy but I see the Lord as a parent that has to constantly keep "putting his children in time out" because they keep "disobeying"....Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy, but make not a full end:" (KJV) As loving parents, do we not punish our child/rem but do not kill them? :) Just kidding, as a mother I love my son, I punish him but always reward him later! God does the same with Isreal.
John 2:23-3:22
5: ..."Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the spirit, he cannot enter the kingdon of God." (KJV) It is not enough just to be baptized of water, we have to accept the Lord's Spirit within us, we must be baptized of the Spirit only then will we be saved and be able to go to Heaven.
John 3:16 We all know this verse and personally, I still love the KJV the best. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." Timeless classic that seems to get lost in the Net Bible translation.(my opinion only)On a side note, that is always seen during football season, the John 3:16 sign, but I have not seen it the past few years?
So today we met 3 Judges Tola, Jaar, and Jephthah. Eight Judges thus far Otheniel, Ehud, Samgar, Deborah, Gideon, Tola, Jaar and Jephthah. ...

Judges / Leaders so far: Otheniel, Ehud, Samgar, Deborah, Gideon … I am not sure if Abimelech counts as one at this point or if indeed it will be his younger brother Jotham...
July 04, 2010
Judges 9:22-9:57
22: Well, I guess that answers that question Abimelech only reigned 3 years before trouble started.
He is quite a warrior though, he had 5 wars and won them all
53: Again, the Lord used a woman as he did during the leadarship of Deborah, to kill a mighty king!
So no, he is Not one of the judges we shall read about in the book of Judges.
Jeremiah 4:1-4:31
4: This verse was an interesting analagy to me "Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, and take away the foreskins of your heart..." (KJV) I thought that Jewish people do not get cirumcised?
14: The Lord can not make it any clearer that He wants his people to repent. Will they?
22: The Lord says they are like foolish children. How many times do we tell our little ones not to do something or they may get hurt, and they do it anyway and come to us crying? We are the Lord's children, he may punish us when we do wrong, but he will not destroy us.
John 2:1-2:22
8: Jesus knew how to party ;). No, seriously, people drank wine in Jesus' day more than water I believe because sometimes the water was not always safe to drink? Anyone can correct me if they like....
Perhaps, Jesus used this as a show of the first of many miracles to come, because the people could relate to this miracle the most?

Judges / Leaders so far: Otheniel, Ehud, Samgar, Deborah Gideon ...
July 03, 2010
Judges 8:13-9:21
Gideon was used by God to deliver Isreal but in his lifetime he does a couple of conflicting/ confusing things ...
27: He made an ephod out of the gold ear rings. This I believe is a false god? ... and the Isrealites "...went thither a whoring after it .... became a snare to Gideon and his house.
30: And Gideon had 70 sons because of his many wifes. I know in the time of the Bible this was common, to have more than one wife, but wow, this was kind of whoresh of Gideon, no?
9:5 Wow, Abimelech killed his own family just because he wanted to be king ... his whole family except his youngest brother just because he escaped! :( Terrible.
15: Jotham likens his older brother Abimelech to a thorn tree.
21: Although Abimelech is king, I am not so sure at this point of the reading we can consider him a "judge of Isreal".
I believe everything went south so quickly for Gideon's family because of the false god he made.
Jeremiah 3:16-3:25
25: The Lord wants Judah to repent from their ways.
John 1:35-1:51
42: "...thou Shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone." ... We know this is Peter. Reminds me of a verse I read in the New Testament somewhere when Jesus said to Peter, "Upon tjis rock I shall build my church". I think that is right, I will find it somewhere again, I am sure.
I also appreciated Saul's interpretation of the Scriptures today.

So far, we have met 5 judges in the Book of Judges, Otheniel, Ehud, Samgar, Deborah, Gideon / Jerubbaal (If you look at this name it could be a cobination of Jerusalem and baal). Gideion got this name because he torn down the idol baal.
July 02, 2010
Judges 7:1-8:12
7: 300 that is all God needed to deliver Isreal. Anazing!God used one percent of the men that originally showed up to help Gideon. God could have done it by Himself and I believe this is the point God was trying to make.
12: 300 men indeed seems no match on the surface! Their enemies covered the valley as grasshoppers!
21: Their enemies, numbering in the tens of thousands, seemed to have also fled like grasshoppers. :)
Perhaps God was patiet with Gideon because of Gideon's personality. Yesterday, I described him as a "doubting Thomas". The Lord knows this and takes this into consideration.
Jeremiah 3:1-3:15
11: Basically, this reading is just telling us that Judah is worse than Isreal. Inspite of how many times Isreal has had to be delivered and forgiven.
14: God is now being more forceful with them.
John 1:19-1:34
31: John baptized with water. The Lord baptizes with the Holy Ghost. "Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world."

Judges / Leaders so far: Otheniel, Ehud, Samgar, Deborah ….
July 01, 2010
Wonder what Judge I will read about today?
Judges 6:11-6:40
16: The fifth judge is Gideon.
18: His faith was a little lacking but God still used him.
32: Gideon's name was changed to Jerubaal after a life altering event. Reminds me of the New Testament, Saul, who later became Paul.
36: Again, I noticed he is still being a "doubting Thomas" he had to see a sign to believe.John 20:29 "... blessed are they that have not seen and yet they believed." (KJV) Perhaps, this is the problem with Isreal. If they could not "see", they lost their faith and another leader had to be chosen to deliver them again and again. So, Gideon's reaction was the product of being a typical Isrealite.
Jeremiah 2:1-2:37
The Lord is very disappointed in his people and he recounts what we have been reading.
30:"In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction; your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion." (KJV)
This whole passage the Lord rebukes the Jews and he tells them what is going to happen if they do not repent.
John 1:1-1:18
So, understanding correctly John was the author of John I,II,III John and Revalations.
12: "But as many as received him, to them gave he the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."(KJV) While it is true that the Jews are "God's chosen people" here we see that God opens this invitation to ALL of us Gentile and Jew alike.
14: "Now the Word became flesh..." I wonder how I would have lived during Christ's time, how I would have responded, how I would have acted? I often daydream about this. I believe I may have been a "Doubting Thomas" but I still would have followed him. It is so easy to look back and read the Bible and put in our "two cents" but one never knows how they would respond until we walk in their shoes.
In the Old Testament, I believe I would have responded like Gideon and in the New Testament, I would have responded like Thomas. But today, we have the advantage of learning from others that have come before us. ;-)
